Self Serve Lumber
March 6, 2002
To Whom It May Concern:
Self Serve Lumber is a family owned Home Improvement Company serving Mid Michigan with eighteen locations and its own 200,00 sq. ft. distribution center.
The company started as a Coal Company in the early 1930's. In the 1950's the company migrated into building supplies. Today, it is one of the very few
100% retail "Lumber Yards" around. Most independents have switched their business to the Pro market or have been put out of business by the big boxes. Today
we continue to grow and stay on the leading edge.
In the seventies, before most lumber yards knew what a computer was, Self Serve started upgrading technology by putting our inventory on a computer. We knew
to grow we had to keep up with the information age. Warehouse inventory was maintained and price lists were printed. As the company grew in the late eighties,
the need to have our stores have their own Point of Sale Computers was evident. We contracted ADS Computer out of the Detroit area to develop a from the ground-up
system that would include POS and manage our inventory in all seven locations. This was a big task at the time. We could not find a company in the lumber industry
that could meet our needs. Gordon Dye of ADS did a fantastic job and created a system that to this day would still be serving us if he did not get out of the
business. In 1998, we determined we needed a large enough computer company that could handle our growing company's needs. By this time there were many companies
in the lumber industry that had computer systems to sell. We selected CDS of Denver, CO. They are a division of CCI Triad.
CSD seemed to have the best solution for our company. They were reasonably priced and appeared to have what we needed for many years to come. After just three
short years, we decided our two companies were going in different directions and we would need a new system to take care of our needs.
In an on going effort to keep abreast of what was available, we
determined that looking at an industry specific system was not the
way to go for us. We found if we went with a provider that dealt
with "widgets" instead of just primary lumber, there would be many
more open doors opened for us. We could use the equipment we wanted,
not the overpriced boxes sold to us before. We could go with a communications
package of our choosing, and not be forced to use expensive Frame
Relay that would give us reoccurring cost of close to $100,000 annually.
The first step was to find a company that was true to their word. A provider that did what they said they would do. Also this company would need to support what
they sold. We found just that in Yeo & Yeo Computer Consultants of Saginaw. They provided us with a proven Accounting and Distribution package called Macola.
Macola serves as an excellent back office package. It has taken care of all aspects of that part or our business. Yoe & Yeo was on budget and time. They also
gave as all the support and training needed to make our transition as painless as possible. Their staff included many highly skilled professionals that took care
of communications, integration, and every step of implementation that we needed help on. All custom work was also done in a timely manor. We feel very confident with
their support of Macola and all equipment at our office.
The POS system was a different matter. Neither Macola nor Yeo &
Yeo had a package at that time. Yeo & Yeo found a fantastic
partner in Mik & Associates of Dallas. Mik presented a solution
called "Fusion". We found the product
to be excellent. It worked on almost any computer we put it on.
It uses "Windows" instead of Unix, which was a breath of fresh air.
This system was easy to learn easy to use and fast. We did not understand
those terms with our past system. The Mik team has always been available
for us. If we didn't know better, we would think we were their only
customer. They work on any major problem immediately! If it's something
that can wait, they get back to us in a very timely manor. The package
they wrote works very well with Macola. The staff is very personal
and never makes you feel inferior. We are very happy to be working
with both Mik and Yeo & Yeo.
I would highly recommend a Macola/Fusion system to anyone who wants a dependable system that is easy to run and gives them the information they need to run their
business. We run the computer system. It no longer runs us!
Sincerely,
